1st Year
You must complete all PTCL experiments in the first year practical course,
and have them signed off, no later than the end of week 4, Trinity term.
You will not be allowed to take Prelims unless you have satisfactorily
completed all experiments in the 1st year course.
2nd Year
There is no formal requirement for the amount of work
to be completed during the 2nd year.
3rd Year
By the end of 4th week in Trinity term of your 3rd year, you must have
completed 3-year courses of practical work in two of the three laboratories
(Physical/Theoretical, Organic and Inorganic) and a 2-year course in the
third. If you pass a supplementary subject, the requirement is a 3-year course
in one area and two 2-year courses.
Physical chemistry experiments are
allocated points; the first year experiments are worth a total
of 21 points, which count towards your overall requirement.
To gain credit for three years in the PTCL, you must complete
and have signed off experiments worth at least 57 points.
To gain credit for two years in the PTCL, you must complete
and have signed off experiments worth at least 45 points.
Note that if you fail to complete the preactical requirement in any laboratory
course, you will not be allowed to take the Part 1B exams
You are required to hand in your Physical Chemistry practical course notebook
to Dr Hugh Cartwright no later than the end of week 4, Trinity term,
in your 3rd year.
