Oriel and St Anne's Colleges, Oxford

Oriel College and St Anne's College welcome applications by students from all types of school and background who wish to study chemistry at Oxford.

Tutors

The chemistry tutors at these Colleges and their areas of specialization are:
• Prof. Jon Dilworth Senior Chemistry Tutor and Fellow, St Anne's College (Inorganic chemistry).
• Dr David Hodgson Senior Chemistry Tutor and Fellow, Oriel College (Organic chemistry).
• Dr Hugh Cartwright Supernumerary Fellow, St Anne's College and Lecturer at Oriel College (Physical chemistry).

Open Days

Both Oriel College and St Anne's College have several Open Days each year. If you are a potential applicant to Oxford, these provide an excellent opportunity to meet the chemistry tutors and current chemistry students, and to learn about the chemistry course and, more generally, life at Oxford. Teachers and parents are also very welcome to come to an Open Day.

St Anne's generally runs informal Open Days in March and June. In addition, both St Anne's and Oriel will run Open Days on July 1st and 2nd 2009, to coincide with University Science Open Days, and in September 2009 (to coincide with University Science Information Day). Science Open Days, during which most Oxford science departments are open to visitors, are held in early summer. Oxford Science Open Days 2009 will be on July 1st and 2nd. The Chemistry Department will be open on both days; further details are available through the Oxford chemistry web site at http://www.chem.ox.ac.uk/. In addition, an Oxford Information Day, during which many departments (including chemistry) and colleges will be open will be held in September 2009. Like Science Open Days, this will provide an opportunity for students who are thinking about applying to Oxford, together with teachers and parents, to find out more about the courses, Colleges, and University.

Informal visits

If it will be difficult for you to come to Oxford during one of the normal Open Days, make an informal visit instead at some more convenient time. Contact Dr Cartwright to fix a date.

Interviews

Interviews for applicants who wish to read chemistry at Oxford are held in mid-December. All interviews for chemistry are held during the same period, irrespective of the College to which you apply. In recent years, the large majority of conditional offers from all Colleges to study chemistry at Oxford have been AAA at A2-level, or equivalent. If you are likely to achieve strong examination grades we encourage you to consider applying to St Anne's or Oriel.
