The Chemistry department is open for two days during the summer.
Does this mean I should be in Oxford for both days?
Chemistry is open during Science Open Days.
In most departments the programme for Open Days is the same on
both days, so there is no need to be here for two days.
It is very useful to go to part of a College Open Day, as well as part of Science
Open Days, if you can. This will help you decide whether Oxford
is the right University for you. You might, therefore,
want to choose the day you come to Oxford so that you can attend the College
Open Day of your choice. College Open Days are listed
here,
with the list generally being updated in
January each year.
(If details for this year are not listed, the
Admissions Office at
Oxford University can provide current information.)

I want to attend the Chemistry Open Days. For which
events in chemistry do I need to book?
***
I would like to have a meal in a College.
Is that possible?
Definitely; many Colleges are open for lunch during Open Days. The meals are very cheap
or free, but must be booked in advance. Follow the link to
College Open Days
to find out which Colleges are open when you intend to come to Oxford.
You can then contact the one in which you are most interested to find out
whether they have places available. You should do this before Easter if possible,
since during the Easter break details of Open Days are sent to every secondary
school in the country, which triggers a big rise in bookings.

Admissions Office at
Oxford University can provide current information.)

I live a long way from Oxford and it would be hard for me to get
to Oxford and back home is a single day. What can I do?
You could stay in a hotel in Oxford, but most are quite expensive. A much better
option is to spend the night in one of the Colleges. This offers an excellent
opportunity to have an in-depth look at a College.
In most Colleges, Bed & Breakfast is free for student visitors to
Science Open Days; even if the College makes a charge, it will be low.
For a list of Colleges which are open during Science Open Days,
Colleges usually give
preference to visitors travelling a considerable distance from within the UK,
or beyond, who would find travel to and from Oxford in a single day either very
difficult or impossible.

I've just found this web page through a web search. How can I
find out more about Chemistry at Oxford and about Science Open Days?
***
I can't get to Open Days because of exams. How can I get to meet tutors
and look round the Colleges?
Chemistry holds an Information Day in
September each year for students and teachers who are unable to
come to Oxford in the summer. Admissions tutors will be available
to meet visitors and answer questions about the course,
University life, format of interviews, entrance requirements, etc. If you
need further information, contact Dr Nicholas Green,
the Director of Studies. You can
send an e-mail to
nicholas.green@chem.ox.ac.uk
to find out more. Alternatively, especially if you are interested in applying to
St Anne's or
Oriel College, you can email
Hugh.Cartwright@chem.ox.ac.uk;
Dr Cartwright is a Tutor at both Colleges.
It is often possible to arrange a meeting with a College
Chemistry Tutor and a tour of the Chemistry Department
at other times of the year; contact Dr Green or Dr Cartwright for details.

My parents fancy a day out in Oxford. Can they come to Open Days too?
Certainly. Parents and teachers are welcome to Open Days and will find information available
on topics such as the finances of attending University, which they may find useful.

I'm about to finish my first degree and I'm
thinking of applying to Oxford to do research. Should
I come to Open Days?
If you are considering studying for a graduate degree and want to visit Oxford, it is best to first investigate
the very wide range of research which is carried out in Oxford (see the
Chemistry Department web site)
and identify a few supervisors who work in research areas in which you are
interested. If you
decide you'd like to visit us, you can then contact those members of the department
whose research looks particularly interesting
and arrange a suitable time to come down
and discuss projects and funding.
